as the Holy Spirit. After much prayer and argument, the Nicene Creed was kindled. The Creed stated clearly that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. The words of that document said that the Holy Spirit was there at the beginning, at creation… and spoke to people through the prophets. In the same way, the Spirit, as the fire generated in the apostolic hearts, established one apostolic Church. This was done, without the Church violently encircling and burning any government. It is said that God had already done that good work in the life of Constantine and his mother. You see, the Creed dictated that the Spirit presides over one baptism of sinners for the forgiveness of sins. By doing so, the Holy Spirit provides the baptized with the Resurrection of the dead. Through the Spirit, God ensures that spiritual life continues into the future of days, in the continuing world to come. Being brief, the Nicene Creed allowed we hotheads to know that trying to capture the Spirit is useless. Completely understanding the work of the Spirit is futile for human beings. The Holy Spirit cannot be captured and smothered by any government or religious institution. The Spirit of Counsel and Might is a gift…. a profound treasure given only by God. The Spirit moves where and when God wills. I often say trying to capture the Spirit is like hunting snipes. They are there, but not there. Hunting snipes is an artistic initiation into adulthood for many young people. For me, it was a coming-of-age ritual. It was a lesson about who to trust. In this initiation, I was told to sit on a stump out in the woods, hold a bag, and whistle, staying into the darkness of night… all night. Two supposed new friends, told me to whistle often…. and loudly! Some of you may know… Wilson’s snipe is truly a road runner-like bird with an ability to hide behind a blade of grass. It’s a bird that is rare to see… fast… and is in fact difficult to catch. But most of all, a fact that I did not know at the time was… it doesn’t fly at night… if it flies at all. |
