rightly taught, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. The Spirit is the spirit of the Father AND the Son, and is sent out mutually by them. That eternal Spirit came especially as a power into this world at the time of Pentecost.

Consequently, while we sinners sometimes sit on stumps whistling in the dark, there is no need to wait for the morning. Being chosen and baptized, we know the Spirit of the Father and the Son is with us and in us. The Spirit established and yet maintains the presence of the Church in many forms in this dark world... directing the baptized toward rightly preaching, teaching and making disciples.

The Spirit reveals to us that just as Jesus was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too shall follow in his footsteps.

Received fully into our hearts and minds, the Spirit tells us through the Word that if we are truly living the life of a Christian.., we shall be persecuted in this world for what we believe. We shall be shunned in certain places and events because of our faith and teaching. We shall be wrongly discredited when great works are done by Christian gatherings in God’s name.

In the Spirit, we die to this world and its destructive fires… sometimes slowly event by event . We need to defy the disbelief of other people and be crucified in reputation to lay eventually at the foot of our Lord’s cross.

But thanks be to God, we need not burn a cross nor car in the public square. We need not carry the flag of a foreign, burdened nation. We are raised again by the baptismal power of the Spirit.

Thanks be to God.

May the peace of God which surpasses all human understanding… keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, our Lord.  Amen
