"Euthanasia and assisted suicide are never acceptable acts of mercy." There are two examples of near-death euthanasia in the Bible. The first is the death of King Saul in 1 Samuel 31, and the other is the death of Abimelech in Judges 9. Both are clearly painted in a bad light, and the individual who ran a sword through King Saul at the King’s request was given the death penalty for his sin. This decision, by the NY state legislature and Governor Hochul, is a great evil that will be judged by the Almighty God. We can fully expect this State to fall more deeply into darkness and face the consequences of God’s judgment thereof. This is a great evil that must be unequivocally condemned by the Church. To those who are suffering, and to their families: It is a terrible burden to suffer and watch your loved one suffer. I empathize with you deeply as my wife is in severe chronic pain constantly and is on permanent disability at the age of 50. It is terrible to watch her suffer, and it is terrible for her to suffer. But I know that until God takes her, in his perfect sovereign timing, her life has beauty and meaning. I have seen God use her in the lives of others, even in her pain, in ways that are nothing short of acts of God. To cut her life short, before God deems her journey over, would be a sinful atrocity, as life is beautiful, even in pain. The Bible supports giving relief, in life, to those who are suffering. “Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress.” Proverbs 31:6 ESV |
