Pharisees, lawyers and scribes of that past day… was and still is... our salvation. He was crucified, died and was buried. However, the Father’s love prevailed. On the third day, as foretold... the heavenly Father raised him from the dead. Jesus, being the Son of God and God himself, thus for all time saved those who confess him as Lord and Savior. However, let us not irresponsibly cast away those everyday Commandments which are historically given to us. Let Christians keep from ripping the Torah… the Commandments… from the arches of our nation’s public courthouses. Let us not try to divert attention away from them by violently demonstrating in the public square and threatening civil law enforcement or their families. Let us strive to keep the Law foremost in our hearts and minds. Remember! Both codes of law, Torah and nomos… as written in the Bible, existed before us so that they may be examined prayerfully, and then used as a guide for the maintaining a peaceful life in today’s society. This examination is fruitful for all matters of faith and life. The Torah as stated in the Bible, and carried to radicalization by Jesus' teaching... is a gracious gift given both for our salvation and our living with our mutually misguided neighbors. When events do not go our way as participants in the Church.., like a lawless society we often rebel. We argue… we try to parse instructions which were given to us. Failing this dodge, we too often leave a faith community that rightfully teaches His message to seek worshipping with apostate persons who seem more aligned with preserving our sinful attitudes. Yes indeed! These are hard sayings. They are so difficult that it takes a special people to pursue the path laid out for us. It takes a forgiven people… a loved people. For these tasks, we who are the sinful Church need to start with the biblical knowledge that we were, and yet...

miraculously saved by grace through faith given to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord. If we can take that knowledge and just walk and work in that knowledge, we will begin to mirror the One who has called us out of the darkness and into His eternal Light. I find it ironic that many of us in today’s world say that these hard sayings only applied to the apostles, to the infant church of that distant age. I say to you that when you hear such nonsense, do not heed that thought. This message is given to the Church in every age. The teaching applied to the earliest of Jesus followers is also for us in our own day. Jesus called His followers to be like Him… to be the Church redeemed by His blood… His Death… His Resurrection. “Impossible... we are humanly sinful!” Most certainly, yet we are called to try. I say examine scripture closely. Jesus loved his enemies, those that disagreed with him… and yet he loved us. He walked with the disciples farther than their mortal legs could go… even unto the gates of death and beyond. Jesus provided for we who are needy, providing a sustenance in faith that has lasted through the ages. He most certainly loved those who hated Him, even unto His sacrifice upon the cross. His Spirit then gave us new life through baptism after he was raised from the dead. In His name, therefore, I echo to you his words so that you who have been saved, may strive to be perfect… even as your heavenly Father is perfect. Now, may the peace of God that surpasses all human understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus our Lord. AMEN |
