out. The authorities clamped down. People got hurt… even killed. Luther, in what I consider a firm decision based upon his interpretation of scripture… supported the civil authorities. In other words, the lesson follows. “If a law seems unfair… investigate the legislation and do not attack the keepers of that law.” Today, in college ethic’s classes we examine laws, as to whether each should be obeyed because obedience to them is our duty, or whether obedience is simply what works for the immediate society over the long haul. However, by doing this study without recognition of the Lawgiver, we can miss the point of the Law. The Torah… for example was purposely given to the Hebrews and ourselves for several reasons. The first reason was and still is that God’s Law is stated in Torah. Since we must bow before God in guilt as convicted by that Law, we are driven by its pending death penalty to deny God or seek pardon. Finding denial useless, and ourselves unable to satisfy the Law or to even to post satisfactory bail… we therefore may accept wisdom given by the Holy Spirit… and rest our salvation on Christ Jesus. For you see the Law is firm! Second, the Torah was made radical by Jesus. He basically said, “Love God, and love one another. This is the social basis for the law. Consequently then, Torah fully condemns us, because no one except for God himself can fulfill all Commandments. Jesus is the perfectly innocent One who came into this world specifically to show us the Law of the kingdom and pay the penalty for our disobedience.
