With forgiveness thereby given because of the perfect submission of Jesus, we can then work by the power of the Word rightly proclaimed and do work of the Holy Spirit witnessing in the public square. Therefore, dear reader… please know that we need to adjust to the flow of history unfolding around us. Seeing that the early Christians maintained the integrity of the faith message under severe societal attack from both temples and governments, I think they revealed to us in scripture the path we must follow. I commend to you that conditions are fast becoming similar. The spiritual drive of large American near dead-end congregations and their sanctuaries must begin to plot another route. This I personally note in my own area of small town and Allegany churches. Many of our local mainline, liberal church congregations dwindle and their candles grow dim. They have been taken captive by modern, progressive heresies. By inviting LGBTQ+ subculture participations without lifestyle admonishments so to maintain church attendance, these mainline denizens deliberately skid Christians into a sinful ditch by helping to smash the lasting growth made possible by heterosexual couples who have children and exhibit proper family togetherness and development. As well, more than a few evangelical and fundamentalist congregations also suffer from leadership failures, sexual travesties, theological errors or ecclesial rigidities that team up to cause membership losses. As St. Paul reminded, things are not changed... “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Keeping our Lord’s mandate in mind, therefore, let us now struggle during this season to consider returning to past gathering structures.
