Consequently, in concern for women’s rights we slid closer to the date of birth as the allowed “termination” date. Amid this stood the Church. We who study scripture know the divine record reading from the Commandments were given to the formative people of Israel. The word clearly states… “You shall not kill.” (Exodus 20:13) Note that the Law does not give exceptions. Yes, there have been times when we disobey… such as against criminals for personal protection... or in the case of war crimes. The “self protection” and “just war” issues have been serious debate topics for many clergy persons. However… as Christians we further hear firmness against the taking of human life echoed to us by Christ Jesus, who radicalized the mandate as he said… “You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire” (Matthew 5:21-22) Indeed, the fact that life begins at conception is well attested in scripture and Almighty God has stated that it cannot be rightly ended by us as individuals. We note the divine will thereby tilts toward its continuance for us and our descendants. We read of Abraham… When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. Then Abraham put forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here am I.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, |
