THE TERM known as Gain-Of-Function (GOF) describes a scientific process that modifies a viral or biological agent so to grant enhanced activity to that entity. To do this, a science laboratory performs proper genetic modifications to change the DNA strand of a particular cell. Historically, the process has been very beneficial… but also can result in serious drawbacks. The latter situation was indeed the case in the recent Wuhan virus outbreak. In that initial study, made in a supposed effort to ward off the effects of flu on humans, a modified virus was cultivated to combat the illness. The COVID virus was created from a monkey pod or bat flu, coupled with a “spike” gene. This was meant to ward off the flu as it attacks human cells. While the initial effort may have had grand intentions, the problem was that the research “bug” escaped from the lab, far earlier than it could be classified as “weak”. Potent COVID got loose. The fast multiplying escapist bug rapidly meant illness and death for many persons. Why did this happen within a controlled environment? Some say the confinement policies of the lab were insufficient. Other authorities speculated that a powerful moneyed drug company sponsored the viral escape, just so a new miracle drug developed could be sold. By doing so, the corporations could cure the dread illness and prevent deaths… and receive accolades while raking in GREAT profits. Other social theorists, however, contend that the researchers were closely allied with harmful Chinese governmental influences… and those militant powers were looking for a covert biological weapon. At present, while some of these suspicions still lurk amid government personalities…, the accusations are claimed to be under further investigation. For sure, we know hereditary modifications have benefited human society for centuries. We only need to point out modern cross-breeding of animals and plants. Many animal breeders note well these available effects when cross breeding for specific physical characteristics, such as when breeding cattle, horses, dogs.., etc. For example, the hardy Missouri mule plows from history many testimonials to the usefulness of crossovers. Also, many disease-resistant corn, wheat, fruit and other useful crops have been brought into the marketplace. Thought as beneficial, these however are |
